Penrith Progeny Show – Crossing Type & Mule Progeny Results
20th July 2024
Penrith
Mr Ian Cousin, Rookby Farm
After the wash out of last year it was great to get a dry day, ideal for showing sheep at their best, rather than with backs up and heads down…..and that was just the handlers!
There was a smaller number of sheep entered in both sections this year, and along with the fact the two rings, which usually ran next to each other, were at opposite ends of the sheep rings gave it rather a disjointed feeling, rather than the more community feel that it normally gets.
In the crossing lines it was a case of Deja Vous for the Riddings flock as they won the Championship again, with a gimmer lamb out of a Hewgill bred ewe, the mother of last years Champion gimmer lamb. This one is by the £14,000 Brennand tup bought out of Hawes last year, and it certainly caught the eye of the Judge, Ian Cousin, who had no hesitation in placing her champion. The Hewgill ewe, by the L7 Riddings, is proving to be a shrewd buy, as well as taking the last two Penrith titles, one of her sons was the sire to the second prize single mule gimmer lamb for the Kilnstown flock too at Penrith.
The Reserve Champion went to Messrs Pedley, Yore House with a stonking tup lamb by the S8 Farden bought in Hawes last year. He is out of a ewe by the L1 Carry House, and she also bred the champion tup lamb which they sold at Carlisle last year, so again, the strong maternal lines were proving their worth in the show results.
The progeny groups were dominated by the Yore House flocks, with them taking all three classes. They took the championship with three gimmers by the £40,000 Midlock Commander and then the reserve place with 3 gimmer lambs by the S8 Farden.
As ever, there was plenty of attention in the mule ring. The overall individual champion was taken by Jam Robinson and his Highberries mule shearling which has proved untouchable at the shows this year, already having the Highland and Yorkshire titles firmly under her belt.
Shaun Procter from the Spurrigg flock took the coveted single gimmer lamb title, with Kilnstown taking a close second.
In the progeny section the championship was taken by Martyn Archer, Carry House, with his Hexham type lambs, again the same as last year, by the £25,000 Midlock Magic, shared with the Steel flock. His mule lambs have also won at the Highland the last two years too, proving to be a very consistent breeder.
The reserve was taken by Joe Throup, Chelker, with a pen of bonny lambs by the winner of the tup shearling class in the BFL section, a Dawyk tup, bought out of Hawes last year.
