Anglesey Show

Mr Dewi Wyn Williams, Blacket House

Anglesey Show – 12th & 13th August 2026

The scorching hot summer in Wales continued as the job of judging the Bluefaced Leicesters at this year’s Anglesey show fell to local breeder Dewi Williams of the Blacket House flock. Despite the lack of grass and the oppressive heat, the sheep in front of him were a credit to the exhibitors and provided him with a stiff task.

Coming out on top was the shearling tup from Dewi and Meinir Parry’s Nant-y-Glyd flock. This was the first time they’d taken the championship at their local show, having hit the crossbar a couple of times in recent years. Their winner was their stock tup bought out of Builth last year, Kirkstead V1. A son of the £12,000 Madrissa S7, he’s had a good time of it this summer as he was following up his first prize at the Llanfyllin Progeny show from the previous week. He’s grown into an imposing sheep with real power and presence, attributes which later helped him go on to scoop Reserve honours in the interbreed, as well as being part of the Reserve interbreed pairs.

His partner in that interbreed pairs was the reserve breed champion from the Roberts family, Myfyrian. She was the victorious aged ewe, Myfyrian P33, a tremendously sharp daughter of the Lowes Fell M1, she stood to attention with her ears up all day. She was actually sold up at Carlisle as a lamb for 1100gns, and after five years of regretting it, Myrfyn had the chance to buy her back this January when the Plas Ucha flock was dispersed, a chance he took at 1400gns, proving that inflation really does affect everything.

Alfie Benbow again ventured across the water, his bid for a threepeat of championships at this show may have been thwarted, but he put up a serious title defence, taking four red rosettes, as well as the reserve in both sections, back to Montgomeryshire with him. His reserve male is one of the stock tups in his taid’s Gornal flock. Whinnyhall T15 is a stylish, upstanding son of the £11,000 West Bolton R1, he’s left some great lambs at the Gornal since they bought him as a lamb for £1200 a couple of years ago.

The reserve female champion was the Kirkstead bred gimmer which Alfie bought jointly with Dai Kear of the Three Cliffs flock for £11,000 back in January when she stood champion at the Blue Belles sale. She’s grown into lovely yearling, with style, great colour and a serious carcass. She happens to be a full ET sister to the day’s champion.

Along with those two class winners, Alfie also won the group, as well as triumphing in the tup lamb class with a lamb carrying the Gornal prefix. This was a superbly balanced son of Blacket House T25, who was himself the sheep Alfie won the championship with here last year. The lamb has snow white hair and great power, just like his father, and will likely be for sale at Builth in September.

The last class winner to mention was the winner of the ewe lamb class from the Nant-y-Glyd team. Their supremely pretty lamb wasn’t the biggest, but judge Dewi rated her sheer flashiness and correctness enough to stand her top of the line ahead of some bigger competition. She’s a young triplet daughter of the day’s champion, and if she takes after her father she won’t be lacking for scale by next year’s show.
