Hawes – Saturday 24th January 2026

A packed ringside saw a great trade for the Hawes Honeys sale at the spiritual home for the Crossing Type of Bluefaced Leicesters. It was a cold wind blowing outside but the trade was red hot as 73 sheep came under the hammer.

The highlight of the day had to be the Hewgill consignment from the Lord family, which saw them set a new breed record for a female when their lead gimmer hogg sold for £22,000. This smart hogg was by the homebred R38 which has done so well for them, having lambs in the champion mule gimmer lamb pens over the past two years. Bidding was fast and furious, with Mike Anderson, Aberdeen, placing the final bid, to join his growing Hardhaugh flock. They also saw a bid of £10,000 for their second hogg too. This one, Hewgill V38 is by a homebred son of the Sealhouses, which has been doing so well for them. She is the full sister to the £28,000 V1 sold at Hawes last autumn. Taking home this beauty was Aaron Troughton, Firbank.

The Champion from the pre-sale show was a substitute gimmer shearling 1538/T152 from the Midlock consignment. This strong sheep is by the Shitlington R6 and carrying twins to the £28,000 Cottage. She was taken home by local breeder Alice Amsden who shelled out £8000 for her. Trade was strong throughout the Midlock pen, with another bid of £3200 for T96, carrying twins to M1 Riddings, with a couple more fetching over £2000.

David and James Lawson from the Gragareth flock enjoyed a great trade too, with a smashing gimmer hogg by the T16 Midlock, which has done so well for them. This strong hogg sold for £6200 to Ian Dixon, Nether Newton. He also took home the Reserve Champion when he purchased V49 Cottage from Jimmy Bell and Rachel Buckle for £5000. This cocky lamb is by the T2 Drummuck which has done well for the Cottage flock as well as Midlock and Overburns Farm.

Other leading prices for Gimmer Hoggs included £3,000 for the pen leader from M Allan of Appleby, selling V68 Greenhow, sired by M1 Smearsett.

It was a good day at the office Dawyck as they saw their Gimmer Shearlings peak at £3,500 for the third prize T62, sired by S18 Dawyck Bullseye and carrying twins to T3 Skelgate. Other Shearlings sold to £3,000 for T55, by the same sire and carrying twins to T1 Hewgill. The Thornborrow family also topped the aged ewe section with Dawyck R66, a daughter of the £65,000 P1 Riddings and carrying twins to the new stock tup T29 Shitlington.

Bluefaced Leicester Gimmer Hoggs averaged an impressive £2,786, Gimmer Shearlings averaged £2,020 and ewes averaged £1,245
