Scottish Progeny Show – Saturday 26th July 2025
Traditional Type
The Scottish Progeny Show continued its tour of bonnie Scotland, this time we were kindly hosted on the familiar ground of the Border Union Show (which is also home to the famous Kelso Ram Sales)
Under leaden skies which made it perfect for showing, our Judge for the morning Mrs Kate Smith from the Low Arkland flock began her duties.
After working her way through the individual classes Kate found her overall individual champion in the pen of Alan McClymont, Kirkstead. This was his homebred gimmer Kirkstead Duchess 2625/S053 who showed herself to perfection in the ring. She is sired by the £2200 Blythbank and out of a 4000 guinea Blacket House. She has been shown successfully already this year taking champion and reserve interbreed at this year’s Biggar show.
Reserve individual champion was an impressive homebred shearling ram 4407/T001 from Suzie & Claudia Claydon, Clarilaw. He has been shown successfully this season taking reserve male at the Royal Highland Show. In 2024 he was shown successfully as a lamb taking red tickets at Border Union Show and Duns Show. He will be offered for sale together with 4407/T002 who he paired up with to take first prize in the progeny section for the best pair of shearling tups later this year at the Kelso Ram Sales. They are both sired by 125/P006 West Bolton.
Alan McClymont found red tickets coming his way in several of the other individual classes too including the ram lamb class this was with a £12,000 Madrissa son out of Beldhu bred daughter of £5800 Kirkstead. He was also first in his class at the Royal Highland Show this year and will hopefully go to the Kelso Ram sales this September.
In the aged ewe class this was a Kirkstead homebred ewe, taking the red ticket this time, she is sired by 4000gns Blacket house out of a Ashes L1 mother. She is also the dam of Duchess and also won first in her class at Biggar Show
Kirkstead took the first prize in the ewe lamb class, this was a homebred lamb, sired by £2000 Wallholme and out of an Ashes L1 daughter
In the aged ram class the red ticket was awarded to Jack Kay & Sons, Hartside Lammermuir, with their bought in ram 4447/R005 AUCHRY , he was the pre sale show champion at Kelso ram sales in 2023 and cost £5500. His sire is West Bolton 125/N002. Jack will be entering shearlings bred by him for Kelso this September.
In the progeny section it was success again for the Kirkstead team taking both champion group and reserve.
The overall champion group consisted of the mighty £12,000 Madrissa 5076/S007 with two tup lambs Alan purchased him at the 2024 Kelso Ram Sales in partnership with Lisa Fleming, Falnash and Bo Brown retaining a share.
The Reserve group was also from the Kirkstead team with an impressive pair of gimmers sired by the £2200 Blythbank
In the Mule section champion Mule Group was awarded to Stephen Crozier, Watersyke with his group of three mule ewe lambs (ex cheviot) shown with their sire
A successful day all around and thanks to all the members who entered the show at this new venue.
