We extend our sincerest gratitude to our Judge Shauna Fitzmaurice for our first sale of 2024.
Shauna’s keen eye and expertise were instrumental, her thoughtful selections not only showcased her tastes but those that reflected the demands of today’s market.
The judging began with our aged ewe class, this first class showcased an impressive lineup, where the top positions were hotly contested.
Claiming the coveted 1st place and overall reserve champion was lot No. 70, a robust and sharp sheep from William Adams of the Holmview Flock. A “Dazzler,” daughter, this ewe stood out for her strength and character. In 2nd place was lot No. 1, a Moneygran ewe in lamb to R1 Highberries. Noteworthy for her colour and boasting bloodlines which trace back to Smearsett and Carry House, arguably this would sheep would be an asset to any flock. The 3rd place was secured by a strong and correct ewe from Dominic Mc Crystal, this sheep breed the 15K Gambler sold in lamb to the well-known Wingman. The top price from Dominic McCrystal’s pen was lot 51 his homebred ewe hogg 4367/S032, she is an embryo out of a Midlock ewe and by the 30k N1 Hewgils sold to Alistair Christie, The Fields for 1700gns. The highlight of the sale was the 4th place sheep from Ballytober, fetching an impressive 2400gns and in lamb to 8K S2 Cottage sold to S.Laverty from the Orrview flock.
Anticipation fills the region as we eagerly await the arrival of the offspring next year, promising to carry forward the more exceptional bloodlines. The spotlight shone on the Ewe Hogg class, where enthusiasts witnessed a fierce competition for the honors. Securing 1st place was Lot No. 9, an Orraview ewe from the Moneygran flock. This striking ewe, in lamb to R1 Highberries, stood out for its attractiveness and sharp features, ultimately catching the discerning eye of the judge. The successful bid for this exceptional sheep reached an impressive £1100, highlighting its desirability and market appeal. Eamon, a noted breeder, demonstrated his prowess once again by clinching the 3rd place with Lot No. 10, a ewe carrying twins to S12 Shiflington. This ewe showcased her potential and captivated bidders. In 2nd place stood Lot No. 26, a clean and well-skinned sheep that carried the promise of future excellence. This ewe, in lamb to Ballytober’s new stock ram S1 YoreHouse, traced its lineage to the distinguished 40K P1 Midlock. The combination of appearance and an impressive pedigree solidified its marketability. In the gimmer class the champion of the day emerged, captivating the taste of Shauna and buyers alike. The spotlight fell on Lot 23, a stellar entry from the Blaney Brothers of the Tievebuaile flock. Recognised as the champion, this R54 Lakeview sheep embodied the characteristics demanded by our buyers, boasting qualities that set arguably gripped the attention of the judge. The anticipation and excitement reached new heights as the hammer fell at 1800gns, with P. Kerrigan from the Southern Region securing this exceptional sheep. Taking a well-deserved 2nd place was Lot No. 24, proudly presented by the Blaney’s. This colourful sheep, with bloodlines tracing back to Hewgill and Mistyburn. The expectations for her are nothing short of high. Adding to the parade of triumphs was Ian Montgomery, who claimed both 3rd and 4th place. The spotlight, which often finds its way to Montgomery, showcased two outstanding entries by the noted Beeches Wingmen. These sheep, standing proudly in the lineup, exuded potential and promise. As they take their places in their new flocks, the future indeed seems bright for both of these exceptional sheep. The success of the recent sheep sale not only celebrates the commitment and dedication of the breeders but also reinforces the importance of the region’s superior genetics and bloodlines. As these lots find new homes and settle into their respective flocks, the region eagerly anticipates the unfolding chapters of success that these remarkable sheep which will undoubtedly script in the days to come.
