Borderway Auction, Carlisle hosted the final society sale on the mainland for the season, with a catalogue of over 1100 sheep entered in both the Traditional and Crossing rings. Trade was brisk throughout with the auctioneers find good strong tups best to sell.
Topping the trade at £14,000 in the Crossing section was a powerful march born twin lamb from father and daughter team Allan McArthur and Louise MaClean. Cretlevane W1 is by the V16 Carry House, a son of the £28,000 Ballytober Hijack, proving to be a shrewd investment after they bought him out of Hawes last year for £2500. He has done well in the mules too, with lambs in their top pen at Stirling by him. He sold to Matthew Pirrie, Drumbeg Farms. It is the top price for this flock, which runs to around 35 ewes near Balfron, Glasgow. Their pen enjoyed a cracking trade, with a son of V2 Temain making £5000, leaving them with a pen average of £5500 for their four lambs.
It proved to be the golden alley as the next two top prices both came from the very next pen to the Cretlavane pen, when the Cottage flock enjoyed another great trade. Fresh from their success in the show and sale ring at Hawes, they did well in the show, judged by Bob Hargreave, Barley, where they took Reserve Champion and also fifth prize as well. It was the fifth prize lamb, Cottage W12 which topped their trade. This strong lamb is by the £16,000 Drummuck T2, shared with Midlock and Overburns Farm. He has bred shearlings to £15,000 for Midlock and Cottage had a lamb at Hawes which fetched £12,000. His mother is by the Holmview Riverdance. He was purchased by Muriel Forbes, Pitlochry. The Reserve Champion lamb is full brother to the V1 Cottage which they sold to Midlock last year for £28,000 at Hawes. He is by the S5 Tarnthorne which they bought privately off the Ayrton family and has proved to be a very shrewd investment. His mother is full brother to S1 Cottage, which is doing well for the Reeds at West Biggins. He was knocked down for £10,000 to Paul Fairburn, Marriforth. It has been a cracking couple of weeks for Jimmy & Rachel with four tups reaching five figures and their pen at Carlisle cashing in at £5083 for their 6 lambs.
A little earlier in the sale John Parke from the Forebrae flock enjoyed a cracking trade. They have done well at this sale over the past few years. Their number one lamb, a long, stretchy tup by the Carry House S6, a son of Steel Bruno and out of a homebred ewe by the P1 Cretlevane, went on to fetch £9000, selling in a two-way split to Hartside Farms and Allan McArthur. They went on to make £3000 and £2800 with other lambs, one by a Hewgill and the other by a Caoramor sire, helping them to average of £3250 for their pen of six lambs.
Hewgill once again enjoyed a great day, following on from an unbelievable day at Hawes the previous week, picking up the overall Champion at the pre-sale show. This lamb, Hewgill W14, was full of style and power, and again catching the judges eye from the off. He is again by the V34 Marriforth, the same as last weeks record breaker and out of a ewe by the Hewgill R38. He was knocked down at £7000 to John Bainbridge, Dousegill, Barnard Castle. Their other lamb was by the S1 Sealhouses, which has been doing really well for them and out of a ewe by P1 Marriforth and went on to sell for £5000 to Messrs Fallows, Cockrig, concluding a great sale season for the Lord family.
The top priced shearling was a colossal tup from Nunscleugh by Carry House R5, a son of the great Ronaldo. He was certainly a handful to handle and proved hot in the ring too, selling for £6000 to the Riddings flock.
The Steel flock rounded of a great autumn sale season too, selling to a top of £5000 for a son of V39 Midlock and out of a Carry House Flash daughter which has done well for the flock. This lad sold to Archie MacGregor, Allanfauld and Robert Milne, Elgin.
Once again it has been a good season for the Bluefaced Leicester tups, underlining the demand and versatility of the breed, which remains right at the heart of the British sheep industry, proving time and time again that you really cant beat the mule, from what ever breed or type of sheep, the Bluefaced tup is the best proven crossing option out there.
