Kelso Ram Sales – Friday 11th September 2026
Pre Sale Show Kindly Sponsored by Davidsons Animal Feeds & NFU Mutual (Lanark) Branch
As the Autumn tup sales kicked off, buyers and sellers from all corners of the UK descended on Kelso, where a great show of Blue faced Leicester’s were on offer including both Crossing Champions from the Highland and the Royal Welsh Shows
In the crossing ring it was the Highland Champion which stole the show, with Beeches Venom not disappointing since his last sighting at the Highland. He is by the Steel T3 which is by the Midlock Magic which is casting his spell over the breed at the moment, and out of ewe by the P2 Riddings. Messrs McArthur were the succesfull bidders forking out £24,000 for him, a new centre record for the breed. With another sale of £5800 for a shearling by the R2 Hewgill saw the Beeches flock level at £5814 for his 7 tups sold.
Earlier in the sale the Newbigging Walls flock from Obie Sharp enjoyed a great trade with her pen of powerful shearlings, which over the years have a great track record for going on and doing well. Their pen leader and indeed 8 of their 10 shearlings forward, were by the £20,000 Carry House T1 bought out of Hawes. This powerful lad was again by the Midlock Magic and out of a top breeding ewe by the record breaking Riddings P1. Andy and Caroline Hunter were determined to bring these bloodlines back to their corner of Northumberland and shelled out £18,000 for the privilege. Another in the pen with the same breeding lines sold for £7800, selling in a four way split to the Dreva, Edlingham, Lilyburn and Kingledores flocks. The Newbigging Walls pen levelled at £4705 for their 10 tups.
Midlock always have a pen which is much admired and this year was no different. Their pen topper was by the T1 Drummuck and had proved himself to being an exceptional mule getter. He is the full brother to their Highland Show gimmer and his mother is a full sister to Commander and he sold for £15,000 to Messrs Carr, Homilton Flock. Their pen saw trade level at £3636 for their eleven shearlings.
Anders Brown had the honour of being the Harrison and Hetherington auctioneer in the rostrum and his lively selling saw a fast trade and he had the honour of selling the Macqueston flock, in which he has a vested interest, and saw them top at £7000 for a son of the S6 Carry House, which has really put a stamp on their flock. He sired a good number of lambs in their top three pens of mules at Castle Douglas which averaged £220 for 265 lambs. He sold to the Mcaskill family, Wood hall, Dunbar. His full sister sold earlier in the year for £5500.
Next in the ring for Anders was the pre-sale champion from Messrs Robson, Yatesfield with a stonking tup by Carry House T004 and again by the Midlock Magic. This sold to the judge, Robert McTurk, Barlaes for £5500.
