Kelso Ram Sales – Friday 11th September, 2026
Pre Sale Show Kindly Sponsored by Davidsons Animal Feeds & NFU Mutual (Lanark) Branch
As the Autumn tup sales kicked off, buyers and sellers from all corners of the UK descended on Kelso, where a great show of Blue faced Leicester’s were on offer including an unbeaten Traditional lamb.
There was a cracking line up of top notch Traditional rams forward at the Kelso sale, and nothing to chose between the Champion and Reserve Champion from the pre-sale show, which was judged by Aled Jones, Craig-yr-Orsedd. His champion was a lamb from the Kirkstead flock by the £22,000 Glamis which they bought at Kelso last year and went in to win the Traditional section at the Highland this year. The mother to the Champion, by the Blackett House, is also the dam to the flocks show ewe, Duchess. The lamb has been shown successfully this summer, taking Champion at Peebles and reserve champion at Biggar. He was much admired, with several breeders noting that he was as good a lamb that they had seen for a while. He sold to the judge for £9000.
The reserve champion went to the Glamis flock, who also won the Trevor Simpson trophy for the best pen of tups in ring 17. This powerful shearling was by Philiphaugh R9 and out of a homebred ewe by the Mossyard. He also sold for £9000, selling down into Wales to join the Bonvilston flock of Tudor Harris. The Glamis pen levelled at £3188 for their 9 shearlings, with the twin to the reserve fetching £3000.
Rodney Blackhall from the Sheeoch Flock enjoyed a good trade topping at £8200 for his number 1 shearling. This smart lad was by a £1600 Philiphaugh and again set a new high bar for his flock on his third time at the sale. He heads down into Northumberland, joining the noted Lowes Fell flock.
Jack Kay from the Hartside Lammermuir flock topped at £7000 with a strong shearling by the R5 Auchry. It is the top price so far from the flock, who run around 25 ewes on the hills of Lauder. Messrs Campbell from Blyth Bank were forking out the readies for his services
