Ruthin – Saturday 20th September

Kindly sponsored by Meirion Davies, agricultural merchants.

As usual the Bluefaced Leicester sales in Wales kicked off with Ruthin, and it keeps going from strength to strength. An increased entry of shearlings levelled out at a centre record £850.94, with the lambs also up on the year at £390.75.

Setting the pace, just as he did last year, was local titan of the breed Elfyn Owen and his renowned Cernyw flock. His sale topper was the champion from the presale show, which had been ably judged by Phil May of the Derwenlas flock. Cernyw T39 is a son of the £3900 Ashes L2, a Carlisle topper from a few years back, who was one of the first sons of the legendary Burndale K4 to hit the headlines. The tup’s mother is one of the flock’s old favourites, Cernyw L40 is still going strong at seven years of age, having been in the flock’s show team until recently. Shelling out 1300gns to take home this tremendously correct sheep were the Roberts family of Gwrych-y-Driw, Pwllheli.

Elfyn broke the four figure mark six times with his consignment of sixteen clean, stylish shearlings. The twin brother to the champion, Cernyw T38, sold to the Gwytherin flock of Einir Williams for 1100gns, proving that the champion wasn’t a fluke, and cementing further L40’ place in the favourite ewe stakes at Frith Arw! At the same price too was Cernyw T27, this one a son of Church Farm P27, who has bred consistently cocky sheep for the last couple of years. T27 sold to regular customers Arwel and Hedd Dafydd who had made the short journey to the sale from Bala.

The Cernyw team weren’t the only ones generating the headlines though. Gareth Howatson turned out four superb powerful tups with great colour and masculine heads to take home the leading flock average on the day. He topped at 1100gns twice. Firstly with Fferm Tudno T10 a son of the homebred Fferm Tudno R1, who Gareth sold at Builth for 1300gns a couple of years back to the Wallhome flock. He was followed by Fferm Tudno T9, a son of Auchry S7. They both sold to E W Lloyd of Lasynys Fach, Harlech, who clearly figured you can’t have too much of a good thing!

The reserve champion on the day went to the winner of the aged tup class from David Edwards of the Llanarmon flock. This was Gornal R36 who had been bought from the Davies family a few years back and has been used extensively in the flock, hence being up for sale as his daughters are coming through. Full of Gornal genetics, this power packed tup sold for 700gns to DW Jones, Cartref, Caernarfon.

In the lamb section it was a good day for the Nant-y-Glyd flock of Dewi and Meinir Parry. In the show they stood first and second with lambs by the 2200gns Piel View T1 bought out of Builth last year. The winner was V11, who’s dam is a full ET sister to their gimmer who stood first at the Highland show last year. Taking him home for the very reasonable price of 400gns were Arwyn and Dafydd Evans of the Llewmai flock, Foel Cathau, Llangernyw.

It was another unshown Nant-y-Glyd lamb, V13 who topped the lamb section at 580gns. Again sired by the Piel View, who has bred fantastically in his first season, this lamb was a quad, out of the same ewe which bred the flock’s show ewe who stood female champion at the Anglesey show earlier in the summer. His brother will be making a trip to the Carlisle sale next month. Nant-y-Glyd V13 himself sells back onto Anglesey, joining the Roberts family’s Myfyrian flock in Gaerwen..
