Royal Highland Show – Crossing Type
22nd - 25th June 2023
Edinburgh
Mr J Cunningahm, Parkgatestone
Royal Highland Show – Friday 23rd June, 2023
The Crossing type classes started a bit later in the morning with a bit of rain still in the air, but by the time the classes had finished the judge, James Cunningham, Parkgatestone, had removed his jacket as the sun broke out once again.
Topping the charts was a smart gimmer lamb from Alan Shennan from the Farden flock, this cocky lamb is by P1 Coultermuir they bought out of Kelso last year for £4000. He has done well on the crossing side too, with a lamb of his taking 3rd in the Scotch Mule section too. Her mother is one of the best crossing lines within the flock, going back to a Carry House ewe by the G34 Midlock. .
The reserve Champion was a gimmer shearling from the Dawyck flock, by the £7000 Smearsett bought out of Hawes. She carries on the family tradition, as her mother, by the £23,000 Carry House, was also the reserve Champion at the Highland show as a gimmer shearling.
Midlock are always in the mix and again this year they were right among it all, taking both the Male and reserve male champions with a tup shearling and aged tup respectively. Their homebred tup shearling took the male championship. They retained this son of the £30,000 N24 Marriforth, where he has some depth of bloodlines, being out of the flocks best breeding ewe, F70, who is the mother to the legendry trio of Midlock G33, 34 & 35. No doubt the progeny from this boy will be certainly worth checking out this autumn. The aged tup was a colossus of an animal full of power and style, as he was when they bought him out of Hawes for £16,000 a couple of years ago from Will and Gillian Sedgley of the Langstroth flock. He goes back to Midlock breeding, being sired by J46 Midlock.
The other classes saw the Culdoach flock from Messrs W Lockhart take the tup lamb title and Findlay Robertson took the aged ewe class with a powerful ewe and Jamie Pirie took the red ticket for the group of three.
